“It’s two cultures meeting, and sharing and caring about each other”
The Armidale and Region Aboriginal Cultural Centre & Keeping Place (ACCKP) is situated in the city of Armidale on the New England Tablelands of Northern NSW, Australia. We are a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to preserving the cultural excellence of Anaiwan, Kamilaroi, Dainggatti, Ngarabal, Banbai, Gumbainggier and Bigambul nations. With an Aboriginal population of around 8,000 or 10% of the tablelands total population, the centre was opened on the 26th of November 1988, with a second art gallery opened in June of 2019 and is operated by an all-Aboriginal Board of Custodians and management team. We run a wide range of Aboriginal cultural activities and workshops including holiday programs for primary school students, art classes on Aboriginal Arts and crafts and organise services for functions and events including Welcome to Country, didgeridoo and dance performances. Welcome to Country is a ceremony performed at many events and meetings across Australia. It is usually performed by an Aboriginal Elder local to the country or area in which the ceremony is being held. The Welcome is a sign of respect to the area's Aboriginal peoples and honours their elders, both past and present, while also welcoming the event's visitors to their land. Here you will find two first-class art galleries specialising in Aboriginal works of art, a family history centre, conference and learning facilities, a gift shop specialising in Aboriginal merchandise, meeting rooms, an outdoor undercover function and events pavilion and café.
